Get Your Drains and Sewer Line Ready Before the South Bay Rains

Every fall it goes the same way. The first real storm rolls through the South Bay in late October or November, and our phones light up with backed up drains, overflowing cleanouts, and sewer lines that picked the worst possible week to give up. Almost none of those calls are a surprise to the pipe. The line that backs up in November was already struggling in September. The difference is that in September, fixing it is easy.

Why the First Rain Finds Weak Drains

During the dry months, a partially blocked sewer lateral can limp along. Water flow is light, roots grow slowly into the joints, and grease and soap scum narrow the pipe a little at a time. Then the ground saturates. Roots surge toward the water running through the pipe, soil shifts around older lines, and storm runoff finds its way into any crack or bad joint. A line running at half capacity suddenly cannot keep up, and the lowest drain in the house is where you find out.

The September Warning Signs

A floor drain or shower that empties slower than it used to. A faint sewer smell in the yard, or one patch of lawn that stays green without help. The right move in early fall is simple. If the line needs cleaning, hydro jetting scours it back to full diameter rather than punching a hole through the clog the way a basic snake does. If roots keep coming back, our rooter service clears them and the camera shows us how they are getting in, so you can decide whether a repair makes sense before the wet season instead of during it.
