The following situations warrant an emergency visit from a plumber before any more damage occurs. Your first step in any of these situations would be to call Simply Green Plumbing, Sewer & Rooter. However, we’ve provided some guidelines on steps you can take until we get there.
- Burst Pipes. If water is gushing from your cracked or broken pipes, you need to stop the flow. Close the main shutoff valve, then turn on the cold water taps to drain the pipes. You’ll need to leave the water off until we get to the scene and repair the broken pipes.
- Frozen Pipes. If your pipes are not properly insulated, they can freeze during the cold winter. If the pipe has burst because of the freeze, follow the same steps as with burst pipes. If you don’t think they’ve cracked yet, turn off the main shutoff valve, then attempt to gently thaw the pipes. This can be done with hot water bottles placed on them, or a blow dryer set on low. Never use open flames on the pipes.
- Overflowing Toilet. Turn off the water valve located in the lower back of the toilet. Avoid using the toilet until we get there to address what’s clogging it and making it overflow.
- Water Heater Malfunction. If your water heater is leaking, does not regulate the water temperature properly, or the water has an odd color or odor, it needs attention. If it’s not working at all, there is not much you can do until the emergency plumber gets there.
